چکیده

Two adult patients with brainstem glioma were successfully treated surgically. A 37-year-old male had a dorsally exophytic pontine glioma developing from the fourth ventricular fundus, and another 27year-old male an intrinsic nodular mesencephalic glioma. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging clearly visualized the tumor margin in both cases, and showed the relationship between the tumor and brainstem structure accurately. The tumors were radically excised using intraoperative evoked poten tial monitoring, ultrasonic surgical aspirator, and microsurgical techniques. Surgery is indicated when the tumor margin in the brainstem and adjacent region is clear, and the approach is possible without affecting the functional prognosis.

Differences between brainstem gliomas in juvenile and adult rats

Clinical studies have shown that gliomas of the brainstem behave differently in children and adults. The aim of the present study was to compare and analyze the differences between these gliomas in juvenile and adult rats with regard to tumor growth, survival, pathology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A total of 25 juvenile and 25 adult Wistar rats were divided into groups A (15 juvenile ...

Usefulness of Fluorescence-Guided-Surgery in Achieving Gross Total Resection of Malignant Glioma: Evaluation Using Mr Volumetric Study

Introduction: Malignant gliomas are highly infiltrative and aggressive primary brain tumors. Achieving gross total resection (GTR) using conventional white light microsurgical technique is a challenge. Five-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) can be used as an adjunct for the surgery of adult malignant glioma and improves the rate of gross total resection and patient survival. The use of this method in...

Brainstem Glioma in Adults

Brainstem gliomas are not nearly as common in adults as they are in children. They are likely the final common consequence not of a single disease process but of several. They can be difficult to diagnose, and are challenging to treat. Clinical studies of this diagnosis are few and generally small. Because of these factors, our understanding of the biology of adult brainstem glioma is incomplet...

Brainstem Gliomas

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is the most common type representing approximate‐ ly 80% of brainstem gliomas [5, 6]. They have a dismal prognosis with a median survival of only a year. Their natural history is often compared to but worse than that of supratentorial glioblastoma seen primarily in the adult population. Nondiffuse brainstem gliomas, includ‐ ing focal, dorsal exophytic and...

A phase I/II clinical trial for adult recurrent glioma using 131i-tm-601, an iodinated peptide derived from scorpion venom

131I-TM-601 is a 36-amino acid peptide, called chlorotoxin (TM-601), derived from scorpion venom labeled with I-131. TM-601 binds a receptor on the surface of tumor cells, and not on normal cells. A single dose of 131I-TM-601 administered intracranially to human xenografted mouse models of glioma has been shown to extend survival up to 269% in multiple studies. 131I-TM-601 is in a multi-center ...
